I am yet to come across a soul who has not come back from Austin wishing to live there one day! Although the capital of Texas, its quite different from any other part of Texas.Be it the prim and proper politicians, the playful hippies with dreadlocks and their six strings, the UT longhorns or just your average Joe, Austin is a cultural hot pot and possibly one of my most favorite cities in the world ! Here are three of my most favorite things about this city –
1. Food, food and more food: One of the best things about Austin is the amazing food – specially the bar-b-que! Although I have not had a chance to sample Franklin’s BBQ (see I am not a morning person and this place sells out by 10 am!), I would highly recommend visiting the Salt Lick BBQ to sample some mouth watering briskets (with burned ends!) and ribs! If BBQ ain’t your thing, there are lots of places serving great Tex-Mex, specially the food trucks serve really good tacos and what not. Torchy’s Tacos is one of such places! But beware of the long lines, though one bite of the Democrat or the Crossroads will definitely make it worthwhile!
2. Live Music and drinks: Though 6th Street is more popular , I would suggest heading out to Rainey Street for a more refreshing vibe, good drinks and live music away from the college kids who you will bump into every minute on the former. Austin also happens to be the capital of live music! Annual festivals like SX by SW and Austin City Limits are hugely popular! However, if you miss them, no worries, head to any bar, you will find good live music to go along with your drinks!
3. Amazing views and everything under the sun: If you are looking for a weekend gateway, you can rent one of the several cabins and Texas style cabins on the hills surrounding Lake Travis or along the Colorado river which provide the idyllic backdrop to enjoy some water activities under the Austin sun. While in Austin, don’t forget to visit the Texas Capitol which is only next in size to the National capitol in Washington DC! A trip to Austin would not be complete without witnessing a Longhorns game – whether you are a football fan or not, the atmosphere in the city during a college football game is electric!
Well, these photos make it clear even more why we love Austin and the list can go on!
